Guides, how-tos and answers for everything you can do in Talebard.

Create a story with the wizard

Pick a theme, characters and a plot, and Talebard writes and illustrates the story.

On this page

The story wizard (menu: Create, page title "Hey, tell me a story about...") builds a complete illustrated story from a few choices. You can also start it from the New Tale seal on the home page, or the New Tale button in My Library.

The steps along the top (Theme → Characters → Plot → Story) light up as you go, and a short summary of your story builds up underneath them.

1. Select a theme

The theme sets the art style of the illustrations. Click a tile to select it; hover over it to read its description.

2. Select characters

  • Click the + tile to open the character picker. Characters are grouped into categories, with your own characters under Custom.
  • Choose at least 1 and up to 4 characters.
  • To remove a character, click its picture again.
  • Click the pencil ✎ next to a name to give the character a different name in this story, for example your child's name.
  • Don't see the right hero? Click Create Character to design your own.

3. Choose the plot

  • Click + and choose at least 1 and up to 2 plot themes, such as friendship or a treasure hunt.
  • Turn on the Decision Decision tile to make it a choose-your-path story: partway through, the reader chooses between two options that change how it ends.

4. Pick the length

Choose how many pages the story should have: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16. Longer stories cost more coins.

5. Story Time!

The ★ Story Time! button shows how many coins the story will cost. The number turns red if you don't have enough coins. In that case Talebard offers to take you to the coins page.

Click it and Talebard gets to work. It usually takes a few minutes. You don't need to wait on the page: the story appears in My Library with a Weaving overlay and a progress percentage, and becomes clickable when it's ready.

If something goes wrong

If a story fails to generate, it shows as Failed in My Library and the coins you spent are returned to your balance automatically. Click the red ✖ on the card to remove it.
